Every business relies on data — customer records, invoices, emails, files and the systems that keep you running. Losing that data, even for a few hours, can cost you sales, customers and your reputation. Yet many Central Coast and Newcastle businesses still have no reliable backup plan in place.
In this guide we explain, in plain English, what backup and disaster recovery actually means and how to make sure your business is protected.
Backup vs disaster recovery — what's the difference?
A backup is a copy of your data. Disaster recovery is the plan and technology that gets your whole business running again after something goes wrong — whether that's a cyber attack, hardware failure, flood, fire or simple human error.
A backup answers the question 'can I get my files back?'. Disaster recovery answers 'how quickly can my whole business be working again?'.
The 3-2-1 backup rule
A solid backup strategy follows the well-known 3-2-1 rule:
- 3 copies of your important data
- 2 different types of storage (for example local and cloud)
- 1 copy kept securely offsite
How fast could you recover?
Two numbers matter. Your Recovery Time Objective (RTO) is how quickly you need to be back online. Your Recovery Point Objective (RPO) is how much data you can afford to lose — an hour, a day, a week. Knowing these helps you choose the right level of protection.
